Her teammates don’t treat her any differently when she’s on the court, but when she plays recreational hoops at the gym, she finds that guys don’t want to go against a girl. “They’re very protective and very encouraging” she says. ![]() The men are more physical and bigger than the female players she’s encountered, but she says her teammates are like big brothers. Her male teammate “Stretch” Middleton is 7-foot-4-inches. She’ll be in tow when the team makes a stop on its current tour Jan. Not only was learning the tricks an adjustment for Ekworomadu, she had to learn to play with men. Ekworomadu went on to become just the 12th female player in the 90-year history of the Globetrotters. Instead they ask her if she’s married to one of her teammates when they see her in uniform. “Most people have no idea,” Ekworomadu said about the fact that there are women on the team. In 2011, “TNT” Maddox joined the team followed by “T-Time” Brawner and then Ekworomadu. The first woman joined in 1985, but then after nine women were on the team at different times, there was a 20-year break.
